We talk with Nicholas Young of the Artist Management firm Original Machine.

Here are Doug's show notes and links from the interview.

Give us an overview of your project
Artist management, production and distribution.

One of his first clients was Bobby Horton, who does work for Ken Burns.

“Total Management” deal

What drew you to Creative Commons?
Professor Kliq! (N: Actually, I’ve been interested in CC since it’s inception. I’ve known the copyright system was flawed for a long time, but certainly didn’t have the brainpower to sort any of it out. My first serious consideration of CC started with the lectures and writings of Lawrence Lessig)

How did Nicholas and Mike meet?
In 2009, Nicholas started listening to Guns Blazin’ (which is no longer on Jamendo) while working in software (there we go we the technology)

Where did the project name originate?
one area of the brain to another! Domain was bought in 2008.

Podcast network calling “The Machine” is coming.

What are your ambitions for the project?
“Full contact” artist management is the principle thing. Not only administrative, but also press and media stuff.

Spark Gap Recording Co-- A label “the right way” (http://sparkgap.co)

EXCLUSIVE PODCAST NETWORK NEWS!
“Inside the Machine” will be the first show on “The Machine” (http://machine.fm)

Mark Helm - tears in interview. Super raw!

Present stories which need to be told.

What’s touring looking like through Original Machine?
They help with touring.

Nicholas knows a lot of radio stations. (And print and other media press folks --- on and offline. -N)

Original Machine is not locked in to a particular idea. Do what the artist needs!

How many artists are on OM?
Bobby and Kliq are the only two with the full management. (N: Bobby’s package is kinda special. I split some management duties with a different agency. Some engagements we book in house, others we defer to the other agency -- but that’s really not the exact point we were discussing.)
The Noise FM (moved from Kansas City) - concert photography http://thenoisefm.net
Absinthe and the Dirty Floors - thedirtyfloors.com
Joshua Wentz - keyboardist for Absinthe, but has solo stuff and runs a label.
G move J! (Record is GMOVJ. It’s among my 10 favorite albums.
Record label is Sidedown Audio: http://www.sidedownaudio.com/ -N)

Foreshadows: The Ghosts of Zero” - 19-story-book, with 19 songs! http://foreshadows.net/
(J Wentz was an integral part of this project, heading up much of the publishing, workflow, and audio duties. -N)

Are you a musician yourself?
dabbled, but never fully embraced.
“something that he is working on”
while he’s always “business first”

Artist recommendation; set up as a DBA

What are the geographic limits of OM?
Not locked down! (though probably continental US)

If someone wanted to sign up for OM, how would they do that?
originalmachine.com!
address, email and phone # are both on website!

Is there anything else you would like to say/tell us about?
Not going to take someone on unless they can provide good services.

Originally was called an “artist incubator”
(Yeah, but people understand ‘management’ better. Hence the change. -N)
